What is IOTAS?

IOTAS is a full service smart home platform. The IOTAS app seamlessly connects with the smart outlets, lights, thermostats, locks, and blinds through the IOTAS hub to give residents the ability to easily automate their smart home experience.

How does IOTAS smart home work?

The IOTAS Home app connects you with your smart apartment. It serves as the remote control for your lights, outlets, and thermostat, and it’s where you can customise your Smart Stories™. You can find the app on the Apple App Store, Google Play, and online at my.iotashome.com.

What are Smart Stories™?

Smart Stories™ put the automation in home automation. If you like being able to turn off your lights with your phone when you leave home, you’ll love having them turn off automatically! This is one example of virtually unlimited possibilities – you can activate, customize, and create your own Smart Stories™ by opening the menu in the IOTAS Home app and tapping Smart Stories™.

What does the app do?

Do I need to install anything?

Nope! IOTAS has partnered with your property to take the hassle out of the installation and set- up of your smart home. All you need to do is follow the simple directions in the move-in packet to get started.

What if my internet goes offline?

You will temporarily go back to the good old days and flip the switches manually until the internet returns. As a bonus: all of your automated Stories will continue to work, with or without the internet. During the internet outage, the IOTAS app and voice commands (Alexa and Google Assistant) can’t work either. All of your features will run smoothly once internet resumes.

What if an outlet, light switch, thermostat goes out?

Step one: Check to be sure that it’s not a typical maintenance issue like a lightbulb that has broken/burned out, or a thermostat that is set incorrectly.

If step one doesn’t work, try the troubleshooting guide below.

Which device is not working:

Outlet: if the top is working (only the bottom plug is smart), but the bottom is not, try pushing the button on the face of the outlet. To know if it worked, you will hear a click and a light on the outlet will turn on. If that doesn’t work, contact maintenance.

Lightswitch: It may be that it is a traditional light issue such as a burned out bulb, or a broken light fixture. If neither, contact IOTAS support. (hyperlink)

What if I go out of town?

Vacation Story! This feature will monitor your home for motion and door entry, notifying you anywhere in the world if anything changes. It will also simulate you being home by turning on certain lights at certain times of the day. As with any story,  you can modify to your own preferences.

Can other people control the smart technology in my apartment?

Only you have control to grant access to your smart apartment.  All you need to do to add your guest is to click the Invite tab from the app menu. From there, simply enter their email and hit send! You can add or delete guests at any time.

Can the property management team see what I’m doing in my apartment?

No, there are no cameras in the IOTAS smart home system installed in your apartment. Any data collected is encrypted and bundled anonymously with all the apartments in the building. So there is no visibility into the stories you have set up or how you, individually, use the technology.

Are there cameras in my apartment?

No; unless you install them yourself.

What if I want to install some of my own hardware, or add additional hardware?

Your property management team has approved only the devices currently in your apartment. If you wish to install more, please work with your property management team directly.

Is IOTAS compatible with other smart home technology (i.e. Hue lightbulbs)?

No. IOTAS has curated and tested the smart home technology currently in your unit to ensure a consistent experience. As this technology advances, we will continue to incorporate additional smart home products.

What if I don’t have an Alexa or Google Assist?

Alexa or Google are not required to use IOTAS. It is only required if you’d like to use voice commands to control your smart devices. Otherwise, you can use the app to control your apartment from anywhere. To set up your Alexa, follow the instructions in the Alexa app to set up your IOTAS Home Skill.

How do I setup the IOTAS Home Alexa skill?

Control and automate your IOTAS smart home by simply talking with Amazon Alexa.

  1. Download and open the
    Amazon Alexa app on your phone
    Select Smart Home in the menu
  2. Select Smart Home Skills on the bottom
    of the Devices section
  3. Select Enable Smart Home Skills
  4. Search and select IOTAS Home
  5. Select Enable
  6. Sign into your IOTAS account
  7. After your signed into IOTAS successfully,
    exit the screen by selecting the X in the
    top right corner
  8. Select Discover Devices

What happens when I move out?

Your profile is attached to you, not to your apartment. When you move out, your apartment will reset to be a blank canvas for the next lucky inhabitant. We hope you move into another IOTAS enabled apartment, and when you do, your preferences and Smart Stories™ will follow you to your new home.

What if I don’t want a smart apartment?

If you’d rather not use IOTAS technology, you don’t have to. Simply use your switches, outlets, and thermostats normally and they’ll work just fine even if you never download the app or create an IOTAS account.

FAQs for Properties

What is IOTAS?

IOTAS is a home automation platform that integrates smart switches, outlets, thermostats, and sensors with our proprietary software to provide a smart home experience for renters and smart building control for property managers. Through partnerships with property developers and managers, smart home technology is installed and made ready for residents before they move in. IOTAS primarily focuses on large multi-family apartment buildings.

What does the name IOTAS mean?

How does IOTAS work?

The smart devices (light switches, outlets, thermostats, and sensors) communicate directly with the hub in the apartment. The hub controls these devices, and it also connected to the internet, allowing control from anywhere in the world.

How do residents use IOTAS?

The resident downloads the IOTAS app (available on the Apple App Store and on Google Play). That’s it! The app will walk the resident through the setup process.

What is the Property Dashboard?

The Property Dashboard is the web portal used by the leasing office to manage vacant units and common areas, as well as receive building alerts such as freeze warnings or potential wasted energy. It is also used to grant and manage residents’ access to the IOTAS system. It can be accessed by visiting pm.iotashome.com.

What if more than one person in an apartment wants to use the IOTAS app?

No problem. Once one resident is set up, they can use the app to invite others.

What if the resident doesn’t have an Android or Apple device?

There is an IOTAS web app that can be accessed by visiting my.iotashome.com from any smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Will IOTAS work without the internet?

Without an active internet connection, there is no way to remotely control the IOTAS smart devices. Switches, outlets, and thermostats will still function manually without internet. Some Smart Stories™ will also still function, but will not be customizable until internet connectivity is restored.

What’s a hub?

The hub is the device that communicates with and controls all the devices and sensors in each apartment. It’s also connected to the internet, which is what allows remote control from anywhere in the world.

What if something happens to the hub?

If the hub is unplugged, loses its internet connection, or is otherwise disabled the IOTAS system will not function in that apartment. The switches, outlets, and thermostats will still work manually, but remote control and some Smart Stories™ will no longer function.

What if the hub is temporarily unplugged?

Plug it back in. After a temporary power loss, the hub will resume normal operation once power is restored.

Do we use cellular to connect our hubs for vacant units?

In short, we do use cellular. However, cellular is not a good technology for MFH because the chief complaint we hear from residents in high rise buildings is that they have poor cell reception because the windows are treated with anti radiation materials. We plan on using LoRa or LTE-M which better supports IoT devices in the long run. In the short term we’re happy to support you via cellular, WiFi, or Ethernet.
